Screen-Free Week Spotlight: Spring Garden Township
Christine Kaufman is a first-time Screen-Free Week Organizer. We asked her about her experience planning a Screen-Free Week in Spring Garden Township, Pennsylvania.
How will Screen-Free Week be celebrated in spring garden?
Spring Garden will be working with local businesses to provide an activity each night for the kids to participate in. This flyer lists the free events we have planned and how kids sign up:
Monday, April 29: CrossFit, 5-6 p.m.
Tuesday, April 30: Body Rhythms, 5:45-6:15 p.m.
Wednesday, May 1: ThunderFITness, 6-7 p.m.
Thursday, May 2: Roll R Way, 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Friday, May 3: Kids Fun Run at Tri Hill Park, 5:30 p.m.
Why did you decide to coordinate a SFW?
I heard about it last year and thought it would be a good idea for us to give it a try and see if we could get something going in our Township.
How did you get local organizations and businesses to participate? How did you decide which to approach?
I know some of the owners of the local businesses so for me I just called them or stopped by to discuss what my goal was to organize a Screen-Free Week.
How are you getting the word out to people in your area?
Flyers are sent to the school district and info is included in the Spring Garden Township newsletter. We also email past participates from other programs and send press releases to local newspapers.
What has been the biggest challenge so far in organizing your SFW?
Honestly, it has been very easy. Everyone that I have talked to has been very positive and loves the idea so they are willing to donate time or supplies.
What advice do you have for other organizers who want to coordinate a Screen-Free Week in their community?
Talk to any organization or business that is involved with children and get them onboard. They will help you advertise and get the word out!
